I was wondering when checking a cap for ESR, how do you determine good
or bad? Do different type caps have different acceptable ESR limits?
Should all caps have infinite ESR? I am still a beginner in repair.
Also I am purchasing a sencore LC101 that will test for ESR. Any help
would be thankful as allways.

Infinite ESR is the worst possible thing, think about it! OTOH, zero
ESR is what we really want to measure but practically speaking
anything less than 0.5 ohms is okay. Greater than this may be okay up
to about 1 ohm depending on the cap size. The ESR meter will have
charts for this.

.... The current limits placed are based on resistance

If you are just looking for an indication that the capacitor under test is
suspect then Bob Parkers ESR meter kit is great. If you need to know the
value of the cap as well as it's ESR then you will need something more
sophisticated. We find the ESR kit the handiest of our capacitor test
equipment in our shop. Of course we also SELL these kits so I might be biased
slightly ;-). However the reason I sell them is they work so well, and are
nice and inexpensive.
