EOL solder wire purchase

Hi,

Just an update...

I dropped by *the* (only!) "electronics supplier" in town, today.
Expected to find "price gouging" to the extreme!

Was very surprised to see solder prices almost $20/lb *cheaper*
than Digikey's current prices! E.g., $30/lb for some 0.040
60/40 RA Kester. Yeah, had to pay the *city* tax (Digikey only
charges the "state" portion of the taxes, IIRC) but that was
just $1. And, didn't have to pay for shipping (or *wait* the
better part of a week to have it!)

I will be a bit more careful about trusting Digikey's prices
henceforth :-/

Could be they haven't replentished their stock in a fair while.

But retail price of no-name 63/37 solder is cheaper overseas. I took
some back with me and when they X-rayed my luggage at UAE customs they
asked a bunch of questions that led me to believe they were looking
for gold smugglers.

Best regards,

Hi Spehro,

Possible. They had a reasonable selection (sizes, no-lean,
water clean, etc.) and all were about the same price range
(for the Kester varieties, that is; some "off brand" stuff
for like $8/lb in 5 lb spools)

I may have to rethink my quantities and buy some extra
("Such a deal I have for you!")

We had stumbled on a stash of Amaretto di Saronno at a local
store: $12/750mL. Over the course of two or three visits, we
managed to purchase everything they had -- probably a dozen
bottles! (Hard *not* to look like some sort of alcoholic when
you're buying liqueurs in such large quantities!)

Then, "suddenly", the price shot up to the $22 that everyone else
is charging for that size bottle.

"Hmmm, I think we've been 'found out' :-/ "

<grin> My last trip they were very concerned that I had stuffed
all my pockets (oversized winter parka) with *apples*!
