I'm thinking that since it goes as far as it does before it shuts down, and
since the behavior of it resembles certain other repair experiences I've had
in the dim and distant past, that just *maybe* the reel sensor has something
to do with what's going on here.

This is a very strange setup -- the sensor appears to be mounted on the board
that sits under the transport, and sticks up, getting into the right
position when it's all put together. A couple of other things only connect
during assembly, too.

Anyhow, what am I likely to be looking at with this sensor, assuming some
sort of optointerrupter, an IR LED on one side and what, a phototransistor
or photodiode on the other? Any suggestions as to how to test this? Also,
where the heck might I get one?

I'm told this unit was made by Funai, anybody know of a good source for
parts?

Look at model EV806N. Does your chassis look like this? If so, the mode
switch is dirty\bad. (If this is the one you were asking about a few days
ago.)

That gets me to a picture of a Daewoo chassis. Perhaps I've been misinformed?

There is some resemblance there, yeah.

Same one, I'm not in any great hurry to deal with this, since I'm looking at
this unit as a favor to a family member and not doing retail repairs any more
(and haven't for over a decade).

Mode switch -- if I remove the connector and one screw and pop out the white
plastic assembly with the small motor that's shown on the top right of that
top view picture, that'd be the switch on the underside of that assembly?
I'll fiddle with it some, see if there's anything I can find out...
