It's the hijacking of existing ones that is annoying.

New ones are a completely different issue.

Abbreviations were stolen then just as they are today. You didnt know
so you didnt object. Its nothing new.

The whole point is that other people run the world, and will continue
to come up with new abbrevs just as theyve always done. The best way
to live is put your time and energy into what matters and what you
actually can change. Dont sweat the petty things, and dont pet the
sweaty things.

Kind of.

In fact, your whole rant is specious - i.e., name one acronym that used to
mean one thing, that doesn't mean that any more, in the same
context.

Of course you mean abbreviation--not acronym.

DVD = Digital Video Disc, now Digital Versatile Disc

sweaty things.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And you probably wonder why you're not getting any. ;-)

(hint: that should read, "but _do_ pet...")

That's not the point. Hz wasn't stolen. It wasn't *already* in widespread use
for something else. Like USB was. And PCB was.

PCB's as an acronym for Poly Chlorinated Bi-phenyls was around long
before Printed Circuit Boards were thought of. The chemical known as
Arochlor (one of the early PCB's) was marketed from the 1930's til
around the 1970's so it seems that the electronics industry hijacked
that one from the chemical industry.
