question. how do i make an electromagnet?
do i need the magnetic wire to be insulated?
and can a nail be used as a core for it??

thank you very much.. I was just asking because im not really sure of what I would use. I saw some electromagnets where they used magnetic wires that are uncovered with insulators and some are covered.

All the wires are covered, the ones that appear not to be covered are in fact covered with a very thin 'paint' (lacquer) coating...

Phiber, to make an electromagnet simply find some old plastic covered 22 gauge telephone wire, wrap about 100 turns around a nail, then connect to a 1.5 volt D cell.

The wire is not that critical but must be insulated as CocaCola says. And the number of turns is not that critical. Have fun.
