Egg timer?

Hi guys, newbie here....
Wife goes into kitchen, beep-beep--beeps etc
on the microwave, comes back, sits down and
back into her book.
A few minutes later another BEEEEEEEEEP,
(I'm focused on a problem so that's distracting).
That was a "tea steeping" timer. Well for you
tea drinkers there is a fair diff between 4 & 6
minutes.

So here's the SPEC.
-3 push button switches, 4,5,6 minutes.
(she pushes either).
-Brief pleasant audio annuciation at time out.
-AA battery powered.
-ultra low quiscent current, if needed.
-cheap, (I may make a few up for Xmas gifts).

I know a bit about 555's, OP amps, latches,
but before reinventing the wheel I was wondering
if a schematic might be on the net, or I'll design
it myself, hopefully with some suggestions from
this group.
Regards
Ken

It's a perfect app for a Picaxe 08M.

Thanks but I was thinking in terms of a 5 cents transistor,
or to over kill in prescion, an IC quad OP, with chinzy
components.

That would be a 4060 counter circuit where your 4-5-6 pushbuttons latch
select one of three outputs to activate the voice annunciator chip via a
power up/power down circuit, and when this is finished, it powers down
to zero load and resets the counter/pushbutton latch logic. A single AA
power source and readily available components means you might need a
little boost switcher, with electronic shutdown control, to produce a
suitable V+ for the annunciator and output amp.

Thanks Fred.
I had in mind something cheaper than a voice
annuciator, but that 4060 sounds interesting,
gotta link to the one you mean and a ball park
price.

I think Mouser is the easiest to deal with:
http://www.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?Ntt=cd4060 and some cheap latch
material
http://www.mouser.com/search/Refine...all&Mkw=cd4001&N=1323038&Ntk=Mouser_Wildcards
Each part type also has a datasheet link. You can also pick up all the
little odds and ends like a battery holder, momentary switches, little
plastic box, resistors, caps, etc there .

I mistook annunciator to mean a voice message, so you just want a little
chime type of piezo gizmo, ding-dong, ding-dong, DING-DONG!

The Elegant Way:
Use a microcontroller. One chip solution.
Get modern design experience.
Perfect 1st uC project.

The Newbie Way:
RC timers and discrete digital.
"Now if you can't play with the electronics properly, Daddy will take
them away."

The Lazy Way:
Check Ebay for digital timers with the features you want.

The Wise Way:
Tea vs Your Time...
I'm sorry but tea loses.. There has to be something better you can do
with your time.

The Things Change Way
Don't bother making anything..
Your wife may give up tea because it stains her teeth.

I've got loads of components in stock and a local
Radio Shack.
Hey, a dying piezo will do, a brief whistle thanks.

Hi D from BC, I'm spending a bit of time
in the Okanagan right now.

Great project for Xmas 2009.

Yup, you're getting warmer!
The Lazy Way:
Check Ebay for digital timers with the features you want.

Do I have to read....

Why do thing I'm married? SHe makes the tea.

No chance, her second favorite hobby is peeing.

PS: Been looking over the circuit, likely I'll upgrade
to a 9V battery...hey a modified $5 smoke detector,
does two things!

But, it's so much fun to design a "ding" circuit! (It's just a damped
sine wave.) :)

Cheers!

LOL, daughter buys us a fancy clock that
chimes hourly, darn thing woke me up!
In goes a rheostat, works fine now.

I was just playing with the test button on a
Smoke Alarm, a shot of negative makes it
scream, so I'll attenuate the V to the Piezo,
to get it down to output a few chirps.

Now it's to the timing logic.
Cheers!
Rich

Thanks Cheers back!
