In commercial buildings the heating system is often compensated in relation
to OAT.
In domestic installations often the heating is controlled by a room stat
and/or thermostatic valves.
Most women complain "the radiators are cold" when these controls are
satisfied not understanding the mechanics of the system.
To over come this and save fuel I turn the boiler stat down according to OAT
once the room temperature is approaching setpoint. This stops the radiators
becoming cold through the room stat operating and helps marital bliss!
This can only be done with atmospheric boilers but should not be tried with
oil or blown gas fired boilers which could be damaged by operating below the
normal temperature.
I have found this to be an economical and comfortable way to save fuel.
