Diode clamping

I'm using 1n5404 diodes to clamp the inductive load for a coil gun
    project.
The diodes' surge current is rated at 200 amps for 8.3 ms. The current
that I need to clamp starts off at a peak of 500 to 700 amps and
becomes 0 in about less than half a millisecond. Can the 1n5404 safely
handle this much current? Will the forward recovery time of the diode
cause any problem in quenching the built up current?"

    -Thanks in
    advance
