Digital oven thermometer failure mechanism...

I was looking at digital oven thermometers on Amazon. The biggest complaint
in the reviews seems to be that if the probe is exposed to more than 400
degrees F, it fails.

My question is, why are the probes failing? I'm assuming that the probes
use a thermistor (they respond in around 4 seconds - thermocouple based
thermometers usually take significantly longer than that), but I can't
think of a reason a semiconductor should fail permanently at 400F.

Any ideas?
