24 bit 196khz delta-sigma dacs are very cheap.

Something like the 6 channel PCM1602Y
http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/sbas163/sbas163.pdf sells for $6.50 at digikey.

Can these be used with external buffers to provide a general purpose analog
voltage output? A single 16 bit DAC with a settling time of 5uS would cost more
than $6.50, which is why I am asking.

Thanks

Depends on what you're trying to do with it. If you take a look at the
data sheet, you'll find that the gain error is up to 6% and you can have
a 60mV DC offset. You're the one who has to read all of the specs and
decide if you can live with them.

If you consider the latency of 20 samples by the digital filter, the PCM1602
has a settling time of 450us at 44.1k, nearly 100 times worse than the other
DAC.
Sigma-Delta is ok for Audio, but DC stability or multiplexed outputs are not
possible. The worst thing is within a PLL or other loop, where the huge
latency will make the regulation super slow.
