I've been back and forth with their tech support about this, reset the
muting TRs 303 and 304, reset the ic501, and cleaned the RT103 and 130
pots. It seemed to work until I slid the case back on, and then the
same thing after a couple of minutes--a very low signal to the
headphones from both cassette wells. Any ideas?

Look for cold solder connections, or loose connections, or parts that have
become very temperature sensitive with age.
