What would be the right sort of relay to delay turning on a circuit for a couple of seconds?
would I be better off with a 555?

They make relays called "Time-On Delay" the on delay can be anywhere from a few milliseconds to a few days, most are adjustable.

If you have trouble finding them on Google, Look for TDR, or Time Delay Relay.
Green Giant told you the specific type you want, of the many types that are available.
Also pay attention to the specific time-delay range you want (short duration), because
as Green Giant said, some are in seconds, some are in hours.
