    Hi guys!

Probably a pretty basic question for you, but what exactly is a decoder?

For a project, I plan on creating an LED cube, and was going to use a shift register to send outputs to the LED. My friend said he was going to use a decoder...what exactly is a decoder and whats the principal behind it? I understand shift registers and putting them in parallel.

    Hi Tave,

A decoder convert data from a given format to another format.
Can be binary to bcd, bcd to decimal or any combination. What your friend is probably going to
use is an address decoder. They are primarily intended to select one chip a time in µC or CPU circuits. Here he can address one led a time. It's consume more control pin's than a shift register.
