dc motor runs too fast

On my troubleshooting chart it says that if your dc motor runs too fast it could be that you made improper connections. What do they mean by improper connections?

I can't imagine. A typical brushed DC motor's speed can be adjusted by the voltage across the (usually) only two connectors.
A brushless motor requires a suitable controller.

Do you only have two connections to your DC motor?
I've seen some that have several possible connections, to allow you to select a lower
run speed.
