On my troubleshooting chart it says that if your dc motor runs too fast it could be that you made improper connections. What do they mean by improper connections?

I can't imagine. A typical brushed DC motor's speed can be adjusted by the voltage across the (usually) only two connectors.
A brushless motor requires a suitable controller.

Do you only have two connections to your DC motor?
I've seen some that have several possible connections, to allow you to select a lower
    run speed.
