Ok, this this is the last of them... anyone got data on:

AM2964 (40 pin IC, DMA controller I believe)
8279 (40 pin IC, also a DMA controller I think)
2651N (28 pin, no idea what these are)
TMS4500A (40 pin IC, DRAM controller I believe)

The 2651N's all have '8040' on them but I expect that's the date code
(rather than them being something to do with the Intel 8048 series). I
could be wrong though.

I've tried searching online but haven't been able to dig up any datasheets
on any of these (I have a feeling the 8279 is the original PC DMA
controller, in which case I'm surprised a datasheet didn't turn up for
that)

cheers

According to several Google hits, it's a Dynamic Memory (DRAM)
Controller.

I have found a few listings for the 8279...

UPD8279C-5:
Manufacturer: NEC.
Desc: Programmable keyboard/display I/F.

M5L8279-5:
Manufacturer: NEC.
Desc: Programmable keyboard/disp int.

8279 Keyboard/display interface.
This IC is a general purpose keyboard and display
I/O interface device for use with microprocessors.
The IC will scan a 64-contact key matrix and perform
2-key lockout and N-key roll-over.
(I have a feeling the 8279 is the original PC DMA
controller, in which case I'm surprised a datasheet
didn't turn up for that)

The first two listings are from a 1983 catalogue, which only have
what I give above and the price at that time.
BUT...
The last listing is taken from a 1997 catalogue which includes a pin out
diagram, full description and pricing at that time. If you want a scan of
the pin-out and full details, I can email it to you.

I just found another old book...

Dynamic Memory Controller.
I have found a description, but no pin-out.
TMS4500A (40 pin IC, DRAM controller I believe)

TMS4500ANL (Texas Instruments).
Dynamic Memory Controller.
I just found a pin-out for this.

As usual for me, these are printed sheets which I could scan if you need
them.
