I have a 20 year old digital dashboard from a John Deere tractor , I have it powered up on the bench but it is displaying nothing and not working . I have noticed that when powered up that what I think are orange ceramic capacitors are getting really hot and look damaged , how can I determine their values if they are capacitors and is such heat normal ???

they look like ceramic caps ... the photography leaves a bit to be desired ;) the focussing isn't on the parts you are describing and hence
difficult to tell if they are damaged or not.

Since there would be no current flowing "through" the ceramic caps, I see no reason why they should be getting hot
unless something else close to them is getting hot and transferring heat to them

please redo the pic's so that we can see clearly the caps in question

They could be tantalum capacitors.
Have you got the power supply the right way round?

They could possibly be thermal fuses, there resistance limits the current flow in the event of a circuit over loading fault or short circuit.. they do get very hot. Is there any readable print on them?
