Hi all...

Few days ago I decided to clean my the glass of my mobile phone with
cloth for cleaning glasses.... Now it seems that this (bad quality
obviously) cloth has damaged somekind of fat-resistant coating that
was on the glass.... I know this because it gets dirty very very fast
and it doesn't clean easily like it did before.....

My phone brand (samsung) says that 1 glass will cost me approx 50
Euro's. That's really much for a piece of plastic with dimensions of 3
by 2.5 cm....

I was wondering if anyone knows some kind of product wich I might use
to put some kind of protective coating on the plastic.... Maybe
cleaning liquid for cassette head ??? Or maybe there's something else
that I don't know about ???

I really would appreciate some help.......

Thanks in advance.....

If the coating is damaged, only replacing it is the solution. You would have
to have the original part replaced by the Samsung service rep for your area.
I do not recommend opening your cell phone. You would need the original part
anyways.

The glass for your phone is approximately $25 US plus the labour. Most
places would charge about $20 average labour, to replace it. The cost of the
phone is very low, only when you sign to have a term service plan. You are
paying out a number of hundreds of dollars for the phone over the span of
the service plan. You would be very surprised at the cost of the phone
without any service plan. Some of these are in the many hundreds of dollars
when purchased with no service plan.

As for polishing the plastic window (glass), the best thing you can do is to
get some fine pomus compound, or to get some very fine acrylic polishing
compound, as what is used for automobile paint. This will work with
plastics. You must use a soft type of cloth, and polish the surface with it.
Take care to not polish the keys, or anywhere that there is silkscreen
printing, or you will remove that as well. Polishing the plastic will take a
lot of time and patients. It is also a kind of skill to learn to do
properly.

As for the anti glare coating, some are put on in a vacuum chamber. There
are others where the plastic is dipped in to a series of chemical solutions
during the manufacture process. It is not something you can buy at the local
hardware store, and apply yourself.

Many people end up badly scratching these plastic windows. The plastic
scratches easily with handling, and rubbing the phone against things. You
would have to have a phone case with a plastic see-through window in it, in
order to protect your phone. This is a solution you can look at after you
fix your phone.

I'm kinda anal retentive about scratched glass on my phone. For years I
have been applying a cover of clear plastic tape (the wide stuff that is
used for packing boxes) I clean the glass, and then carefully apply the
tape and trim to the edges of the "Window" using a single edge razor blade.
Yea, I got no life, but my phone looks good in case someone calls....

PS: Try to smooth the bubbles out with a credit card and work the tape from
one side to the other. when you remove the tape the residue can be removed
with WD-40 and a paper towel.

On a related note (two actually): clear tape--I use the kind with the matte
surface--is great for cleaning fingerprints and other schmutz off LCD
screens. I use it all of the time on my digital cams, camcorders and the
like. Almost unbelievable...try it: just cover the screen with tape and
peel off immediately (I use the 1" width...I'd be a bit concerned about
pulling off a full-width piece all at once, lest I peeled off the entire
screen with it.). If any residue remains, stick a fresh piece over it and
peel again...usually takes it right up. I never thought of using it on a
semi-permanent basis.

Secondly, the Write Right screen protectors sold for protecting PDA screens
might have some utility for other LCD's...kinda' pricey, though.
