current sense chip

Hi all,

I recently found a current sensing chip (LM3814
http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM3814.html) that can measure the current in a
signal (1Amp or 7Amp range) and outputs a PWM signal proportional to the
signal. This is pretty cool, but I was wondering if anyone has found a chip
that can do this but has a serial interface instead?

The way I have been measuring current before this is to use an
instrumentation amplifier with a dual rail supply hooked up to a shunt from
http://www.isotekcorp.com/ This takes up an ADC input on the
microcontroller and requires more chips and board space.

The current is 500mA max at 5V and 12V.

cheers,
