Please can anyone recommend a qualified Engineer to conduct an assessment of
an existing installation and perhaps suggest improvements/upgrades? What
I'm talking about is a Data Centre hosting about 130 Wintel servers and a
couple of Sun units with EMC SAN and some other bits 'n bobs.

The 'assessment' specifically concerns not the computer kit but the
reliability and robustness of the mains power supply via a
permanently-on-line (battery-powered inverter) 40Kva UPS (3 phase), and
associated distribution boards and wiring arrangements. The Data Centre has
"evolved" over time and I'm not convinced the basic infrastructure is sound
....

We are located in Bedfordshire.

Many thanks.

Symantec Global Services? Their consulting services division in London
might be able to find you someone.

Where in Beds ? I'm in St Albans, Herts. It's not really quite up my street but
I have half a clue what you might be concerned about. Neutral currents by any
chance ? I do have a colleague who could possibly assist too who is very
familiar with mains distribution, also in St Albans.

** You will get as many differing assessments and suggestions as people you
ask - that way.

You must ask for specifics, not opinions.

For that you FIRST need to know what to ask.

The 'assessment' specifically concerns not the computer kit but the
reliability and robustness of the mains power supply via a
permanently-on-line (battery-powered inverter) 40Kva UPS (3 phase), and
associated distribution boards and wiring arrangements.

** Like any device, the UPS will work until it stops.

Might as well ask for someone with a crystal ball to predict when that is.

The Data Centre has "evolved" over time and I'm not convinced the basic
infrastructure is sound ...

We are located in Bedfordshire.

** Who is this " We " ???

You own the place or just work there ?

Just know someone who does ?

Your post has all the hallmarks of a dumb troll.

No, Graham, I know something of your skill set and would come to you like a
shot for audio matters, but this is more the "heavy end" of electrics and I
suspect it's out of your comfort zone. If your colleague is specifically
familiar with specification, design and installation of three-phase
uninterruptible power supplies I would be interested to talk to him.

Just to put Mr Allison's suspicious mind at rest (although I'm unsure why I
should care) I have responsibility for IT service continuity in a Local
Government organization in Bedfordshire and we have had two serious outages
in the last year due to loss of power. The data centres (there are two of
them) are both "protected" by UPSs and backup diesel-powered generators.
The most recent problem was due to the UPS failure, and the previous one was
not quite as simple as that, but the UPS played a part in it! I know for
sure that out Insurers will be able to provide an "expert" to "assess" our
installation, but in my childlike innocence I thought it might be nice to
offer the work to someone local. I'm sorry if that offends you.

Thanks for all other replies.

I have a connection chain into global scale engineering firms that may
get to a local recommendation. It is likely to be slow (days to
weeks). My connection is San Francisco based. I can ask, as i am not
sure that my skills in the topic are sufficient to your needs, and i
and somewhat near 'Frisco (clearly not local to you).

I will ask only if you explicitly request me to.

San Francisco is an interesting City, but hardly local as you say! Thanks
for your offer, but best not to ask, I think.
