I have a small oilless piston type air compressor which I am trying to repair. When turned on only the cooling fan runs. I bypassed a circuit board, which the power was routed thru, and applied power directly to the motor. When power was applied the motor oscillates but does not rotate. Does the circuit board control the current to the motor to allow rotation and if so can it be tested?

I would get in touch with the manufacturer , and maybe they can troubleshoot it for you !

Could be the starting capacitor. Though most of the cooling fans run off the motor shaft directly. But you could try it again an using a pencil, give the motor a flick in the direction of rotation. It it runs, then the capacitor is faulty.

Sounds like a bad start capacitor or a bad winding in the motor. Ed.

How long has the motor been out of service before you got it. You don't have any seized bearings do you?
