Hi guys, I have been scavenging components from an old dvd player board smps.
Two components look exactly like a standard through hole transistor. Black with the flat front But only have two legs..
They each have the markings N5S and N25S. Google wasn't my friend today..
Could they possibly be Diodes?
The boards silk screen shows a standard transistor except the flat line is twice as thick as the circular section. And has only two holes.
Thanks in advance. Martin.

Hi
Would you say this looks the same size as a TO-92 type signal transistor or is it much larger?

Thanks Adam, I would say the same size as a TO-92.
About 5mm long and 4.5 - 5mm across the flat section. (just the body)...

Packages like this could be a number of components like a varactor diode, reference diode of SIDIAC. Couldn't find anything either with the device numbers you gave. Sorry.

Don't throw them away just yet, someone else might know what they are!

Ok Adam, I will put them in my container for now.
But if you don't know what they are, then a noob like me will never use them..

Martin, why not whip out your VOM and do some tests on it before throwing it away? Heck, it could even be an infrared photo-diode (depending on where you removed it from) since many of these "see" through black plastic. And you won't be a noob forever. Lay it aside if you can't make sense of it now. Maybe more information will appear later from another tear-down you perform. Can you post a happy-snap of this thing and a close-up of the where you removed it from the board? Maybe someone here will recognize it.

Sure Hevans1944, thanks. It was a dvd player switch mode power supply so infra red diode very unlikely....
I will post a pic of the said items and board tomorrow. Have to work out how to post a pic!!

Easy. Take Pic, compress it to 100Kb save on your PC. Goto upload file in the thread box you are typing in. Its down the bottom. Click full image, job done.

The 114 is size comparison only. The other has N25S and same size.
@ Adam. windows live does it too..

Sorry Adam, I quoted at the bottom of the pics that the three legged 114 1431A was for size comparison only.
I believe it to be a TO-90 package.

Oops, TO-30

No problem. It's still a good way to learn.. I learnt how to re-size a photo from my usb microscope.
Gotta love this forum! If only these forums were around in '84' when I failed my part two electronics on maths.
