Compass - direct connect?

Has anyone tried using a dial tone simulator (like Viking) to attempt to direct connect the Compass downloader via direct connection to low end Ademco stuff?

It'd be cool to be able to program via laptop on site...for the small Ademco panels...10x,15x,20x.

I use it all the time to bench test all kinds of panels. I practice
downloading new and old panels as they come across my desk.

Primarily that's what I want to do. I usually pre-program system(s) before they go out to the field...program all wireless points, etc. Not only does that tell me that everything is working but it save a TON of time at the client's house. All my guys have to do is install per my directions...fd xmtr @ fd, etc. :).

BTW...I was able to connect to Safewatch panel last week and stay connected, only the fields uploaded don't really match. Have you done any hacking on them to get them to ul/dl properly?

No...you will need to install ADT Compass to accomplish that. There is no
way around it that I am aware of.

I have had the viking piece work on all ademco panels even the old vector
series
but have had trouble with low end FBI xl2.xl3. but works fine with XL 4 DSC
it works with high end power 8-32 1551 but not older 1500,2550,3000

I've done it but it isn't any faster than through a standard phone line

I forgot to mention that i have also down loaded silent knight
5204,5104,5207 you can also do 5208 but its faster with a serial cable
using the viking piece and the silent knight modem works fine for the older
stuff
on FBI and DSC some times you need to set panel to pick up immediately if
you let it ring more than couple times it does not want to pick up properly.

Does Compass not adjust for the correct panel revision upon connection?
Suppose you connected with version 1 or whatever panel...and its really version 2???

For the most part yes. I do know that if you are downloading a Lynx panel,
you must select the right one from the get go. Must be another bug Ademco
can't fix.

If you have the panel call you, if you are not successful with the
connection, Compass will then tell you exactly what the other panel is, even
if it is an ADT or Monitronics version.

Yah, I noticed this. I wonder why it can't automatically switch to the right version and connect, rather than having to go back and reset Compass then attempt to connect again.

One thing I want to try, and dunno if it will work is to connect to local panels that don't have acct number in. I always connect panels to phone line even if it's a local...sometimes it's a lot easier to make changes for the client remotely than talking a 80 year old grandma how to change a code.

It USED to until the P panels came out, now you have to know what version
15P/20P or Lynx you have

Anything else and it does auto adjust to the version

AH!
I don't like the Lynx so don't have to worry on that one.
I do use the 15P/20Ps...I think they're pretty ok.

Except they now have 3 versions of the 15P/20P and if you don't know which
your connecting to you get a nice screen with lots of pretty words, you'd
think Honeywell would design it to just say "You've connected to a v1 15P"
but nooooooo

Guess those guys in India don't know about that stuff yet :)

I did notice that it pop-up a box telling you that you're set up for a ver xxx and the panel attempting to connect to is a ver yyy. YYY can't it just switch to the correct version is beyone me. Other software I use for another brand will switch.

India? You mean the outsourced programmers?

You hear about that guy that wants to put hundreds of low paid programmers on a ship in international waters off the coast of california? Take our business and sit offshore, then dock once a month for meetings with clients? Try and do that off the coast of china.

My guess is like DSC the P panels are a different family, also the v1
differs from the v2 with 10-digit account number so I imagine that has
something to do with it, on the other hand the software doesn't seem to care
if it connects to a v2 or v3 panel, just between v1 and v2/3
