Anybody know of a place where I can pick up a cheap transformer? like
120VAC -> 24V AC ish. Low power. ~(2/3)a peak. I am trying to stay sub $5 if
possible. I have searched all over without any luck.

Try thrift stores - they usually have a pile of wall-mount transformers.

This one might do the trick, if you ignore the shipping charges.

The thrift stores around where I'm at must have gone upscale.
About the only thing they have are wall warts.

Marlin P Jones & Associates has a 24volt, center-tapped, 2 amp for $4.99 -
cheaper in quantity ;-)
