Charge regulator

I have an application where I require 36 volts out of an alternator
(say.....wind generator) Is there anybody familiar with the electronics
required to create a regulator circuit for an alternator to supply a
variable output voltage? My initial thoughts were to come up with a
comparator circuit which would monitor the voltage the alternator was
putting out, and then drive the field coils with a PWM signal based on the
output voltage.... to low and the PWM duty cycle would increase - too high,
and it would decrease. The only thing I see is maybe I'd need to set
something up so when the alternator wasn't moving it wouldn't over-current
the field coils. Any thoughts, or better yet, schematics?

Thanks!!!

Sincerely,

Andy Baker
