Change glass top on smoothtop range?

I recently bought a GE drop-in range with smoothtop in a speckled grey
color. Now I see glass tops in a nicer real black color. How tough is
it to change the top? Can you change brands of top? Does it really
have to do more than fit the location of the burner elements
underneath?

I am not too familiar with all the models. But, in most models you have to
take the stove apart to get to the glass for changing. This is a fair amount
of work, if you have not done this before. If you call a service man, he can
do it more easily than someone who has never done it, with less chance of
breaking something.

The cost of a new stove top is very expensive. This is actually not glass,
but is high temperature ceramic. It may come to about a 1/3 to about 1/2 of
the cost of a new stove just for the ceramic top. It is technically not
worth it.
