Can someone help me with explaining a part of this circuit?

I understand what happens when the input is triggered and the effect this has on the latching thyristor. However can some explain in detail please, what happens before that in the 555 timer chip and the rest?

Nothing happens.

A resistor between IC1 and D2 to limit the current would be advantageous.

Where did you find the circuit? If this is a class homework question, I will give you a clue. You don't have to explain how the circuit works but why the 555 timer is irrelevant.

Alternatively, the Thyristor is not appropriate. I should have asked, what the circuit is intended to do.

This circuit is an example of a simple steady hand game.

Can you just explain to me in detail of what happens differently when the push to make switch is pressed and when its not activated?

There are two push to make switches with two different reference designators.

Well, name... you must know what sw3 does, surely? And if you don't know the basic monostable action of the 555 timer, and you are interested in electronics, then there are lots of notes on it on the web and in text books. It is an excellent place to start when learning electronics.

If you are wondering what is wrong with the circuit and why it won't work, then look at what the output of the 555 timer will be under initial conditions. Then look at what is needed to trigger the thyristor.

Is this topic related to your other topic concerning the 4017?

Yes it is and now i understand how it works including the decade counter so no worries!
