# Can air be used as a "semiconductor"?

Discussion in 'Electronic Basics' started by Radium, Mar 27, 2007.

Hi:

Why is silicon needed in the 1st place? For that matter, why any semi-
conductor? Why not just use the copper electric circuits? Semi-
conductors are half-way between conductor and insulator?

Couldn't air be used as a "semiconductor"? I assume that the voltages
used by chips' circuit could pass through air if the distance between
the copper conductor is close enough -- though this would decrease the
amperages, as the current has to flow to air [a powerful insulator]. I
guess [assuming a constant voltage and constanst air density] that a
greater distance between the coppers will result in a lower amperage
while a closer distance
will result. Then there is a point where the distance is too great for
electricity [at voltages used by chips' circuits] to flow through the
air gap. A higher voltage can generate current at greater distances
between coppers, than a lower voltage can. Right?

AFAIK, in digital integrated circuits:

1 = higher amperage

0 = lower amperage

So a 1 would consist of shorter gaps between coppers [to increase the
amperage], while a 0 would consist of longer gaps between coppers [to
decrease the amperage].

One problem is see involves, how to store the current. Maybe certain
types of electrets that do not permanently store electricity? Or maybe
storage isn't even necessary, if the spaces between coppers make up
the configuration of the electronic information.

Thanks,

Air is used by a conductor by nature. Hard to control ! Think
Lightning!

Think before posting. Radium is a Troll.

It is.

an air based semiconductor called a "spark gap" is used in power
stage of a tesla coil.

Bye.

Um, I was asking if this air-spacing could be used as a "semi-
conductor" in PCs.

Google is your friend. It doesn't care that you are a lazy troll.

Metals conduct by electron movement. Semiconductors conduct by
electron and hole movement. So you can play a lot more tricks with
semiconductors. For example, you can't make a diode with just metals.

Air pretty much doesn't conduct at all. The closest you can get to an
active device using air is maybe a triggered spark gap; it would be
tough to design a TV set using only triggered spark gaps.

Okay. What compromises the possibility of using microscopic spark gaps
in place of silicon in computer chip?

spark gaps in place of semiconductor solids. Any chance of this
fantasy becoming reality? If not, then why?

One potential advantage of this chip -- that I can think of -- would
be the ability to tolerate high-voltage static electricity and high
temperatures that would certainly damage the chips used in today's
PCs.

Sometimes he uses Massiveprong and he used to
go by Altivar years ago.

I've searched Massiveprong and came up with tons of posts -- all spams
and trolls. What about Altivar? As hard as I tried to look, I could
not find any posts by Altivar.

I have tried to find Altivar's posts but failed. I am now getting VERY
frustrated.

WHERE THE ___________________ ARE THE POSTS BY
**ALTIVAR**??????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!

Sorry for my harshness but I just cannot find posts under the name
under the name "Altivar", before I get really angry and do something
that I'll eternally
regret???????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Once against I apologize bigtime for my rudeness ever so profusely but
I am really flustered right now. Its like trying to solve an
^^extremely^^ difficult math problem and failing miserably.

Maybe its this guy:

Though, mostly likely not.

This is all I found. None which relate to trolling or spamming.

This is "Lord Altivar", not "Altivar", there is a huge huge
difference.

The email address of Lord Altivar -- not Altivar -- is:

His posts are responses are non-trollish non-spamish responses to
posts. He never started any threads.

I would be willing to check my local gaming supply store I think they
still had some of the old stuff I could check... also I have the book
so I could take a day to scan the whole thing in for proper
compensation seeing as it is a felony to pirate copies...

Sparky is an idiot. He wouldn't even know what headers are.

He guesses at everything he does in life, and this stupid crap he
has posted makes that perfectly obvious.

RaidiTurd and AltiTurd or whoever the **** they are, are other
people, not me.

Get a life, ya fucking retards.

What could that possibly be? Throw a bigger tantrum?

You are really pathetic.

Go away.

Then please show me some posts from the real "Altivar".
