I'm getting this "green smudge" area on the far left side of the screen. I've moved the
front speakers and rerouted all the power cords away from the TV but still no joy. Any
ideas?

If this was caused by the speakers being too close, the degaussing coil will
eventually work this out, after a number of power cycles.

It is possible that there is a purity problem with the set-up of the picture
tube (CRT), or the degaussing coil is not functioning properly, or there is
a magnetic field that you are not aware of that is close by, or the mask in
the CRT is defective. These types of faults takes experience to be able to
determine.

Could be a defect within the degauss circuit of the set, seen a lot of
Panasonic and Sony teles with similar problems.

And don't overlook the possibility there's something buried in the wall behind
the TV, such as a cast iron drain pipe, steel support column, metal studs, etc...

Speaker were too close and have magnetized the tv screen.
OR it was dropped on the way home or bounced around and the shadow
mask inside the picture tube has been damaged.

I'm using a 6' tall chromed wire rack system (from Costco- normally used in walk-in
refrigerators) to support all my AV equipment -- could that be a problem? It wasn't a
problem with a 20" Toshiba TV that I ever noticed. TIA

Well, a chrome plated steel rack could certainly have a magnetic field; try
moving the set to a different location, and see if the problem disappears; if
so, change rack; if not; have set checked out by professional...

If the problem isn't too severe one can often live with the slight
imperfections caused by the steel shelf. The wiser choice is to use a
wood or aluminium shelf. A possible partial cure may be to raise the
TV off the steel using wooden blocks or other suitable spacer.

This is a common problem with TV's with a plastic casing. It's the
steel rack that causes the problem. The reason is that some magnetic
lines of force in the deflection coils find an easier path through the
steel than through the air, thus allowing a slight shifting outwards
of the paths of the deflection lines of force near the crt edges and
it does affect the colour purity noticably.

A specific TV might improve over time because of the autodegaussing
action but it will never be 100%. Worse yet if used on the steel rack
for a long time, then moving the tv to a wooden shelf will show the
opposite effect because it accomodated itself to the steel.

.... Just a little force field zap.

if it really is 'brand spankin new' and you can't solve this problem
with different placement of speakers etc, then why mess about and risk
making the situation worse? Get it back to the store ASAP for a refund
or replacement. In the UK at least, most high street and major chains
like ASDA (Walmart) dont even quibble, they just swap it over no
questions asked. Any decent shop ought to do similar.

My folks had to do this several times with a cheap (Vestel-made I
think)widescreen tv. From their telephone decription, i think the
first time it was the set's power supply died, the replacement went
back soon after because of a mildly irritating noise (sounded like a
coil resonating in sympathy with the horizontal frequency). On each
occasion the store bent over backwards to keep their business.
