A few days ago on Ebay I bid on 100 Zetex ZTX651 high current
transistors. I figured that $20 would be a fair price, so I bid $20,
but I lost the bid by several dollars. Well, I got an email from
"secondchance at Ebay" saying that the seller would accept my $20 bid
if I agreed. Well, ol' Watson wasn't about to be outsnmarted, so I
declined, and didn't reply. I figured that he would put 'em up for
bid again, and I would bid even less, like $17, and someone would
outbid me, and then he'd send another second chance, for $17, and I
would then take him up on the offer.

So he did put another batch of 100 up for bid, and I bid $17, hoping
for the above. So I waited patiently for someone to outbid me. But
the highest the bidding went was $6.00! So I got them for six bucks
plus two and a half for shipping. Made out like a bandido!

So the rule of thumb is to _be_patient_ and never bid too much for
components. Always underbid, and then don't worry if you're outbid at
the last minute. You will always have another opportunity to bid on
the same parts later. Or maybe someone will send you a second chance
email. ;-)

If they're 2N43s, rather old and rare ones as seen in one of the
auctions, then you probably won't see any more of those from that
seller. But other sellers might be selling them. And these are about
the least common. If the parts are newer than a decade or so, then
there are probably thousands more where they came from. Or if you're
enterprising you will find a substitute using www.NTEinc.com.

I got outbid tonight on an LCR meter, and I now take hope that I might have
a second chance. Or see another. That's what I am telling myself, anyway.

So was it a used commercial instrument, or something like the B&K, or
what? I bought an AADE L/C Meter IIb, (kits is $100, assembled $130)
and I've been satisfied with its performance and accuracy. It runs
off a 9V battery, but I plugged it into a wall wart.
Go to http://www.aade.com and scroll down to the meter.
