How can we display digit 8 using HFE4511bp decoder, if we are using only 3 input pins and 4th input pin is being used for something else

The truth table on page 4 in this datasheet tells you every input/output combination. There are two sets of input data that generate an "8" at the output.

I had a longer response, and erased it. As above, read the datasheet.

Oh, really? And for what, pray tell, is the fourth input pin being used?

Note that the idea was to get him to figure that out for himself.

Possibly a purely theoretical question to test the op's understanding of a datasheet?

    Indeed, a nice trick question.

Oops! I didn't notice this question was in the Homework Forum. My bad. The reply that @Harald Kapp made in his post #2 says all that needs to be said. I will ask no more "trick" questions. Moderator, please close this thread.

    You're welcome. S* happens ;)

Why should we? Maybe the op needs a bit more help?

That's probably true, but given that there has been no reply, no dialog established, nor any further questions asked by the op, I would flag this as a "drive-by" poster who is not interested in learning how to read a datasheet but just wants someone to provide a quick and painless answer to their homework problem.
