Battery venting

Hi,
I am wondering if anybody can give me some adivice as to if I'm doing
something dangerous...
I know that normally when you have a bunch of batteries in a solar power
system you need to vent them to the outside of you house.. I currently have
one 100 ampHr battery which I do not have an easy way to vent - I am
creating a dangerous situation by simply placing this battery on the floor
of my office ? (with the wires running out to the pannel on the outside wall
of the house)

The Battery is a standard deep cycle lead acid battery (not gel)

thanks,
Geoff.

Well, I'm not too crazy about this. By 'standard' I assume you mean
something like a 12V marine battery, or 6V golf-cart style?

If you have a well built charger, it shouldn't gas too much. Most gasing is
caused by overcharging. But how well ventilated is your office?

You may never have an accident if its a large office and the battery isn't
overcharged (nor equalizer charged), but I'd be looking for a better
situation. Maybe a sturdy window 'flowerbox' to hold the battery outside
the window? Of course, if you have cold winters, being outside would hurt
the batteries performance.

In addition to the hydroge/oxygen issue you should also consider that
batteries will give off small amounts of sulphur/sulphuric acid. When
the battery hits full charge it will boil/bubble until charging stops
these bubbles will release small amounts of sulphuric acid as a mist
that is nasty.

If you are charging/discharging it regularly I would suggest it really
needs to be outside. If it is there as a backup that only gets charged
infrequently to recover standby losses then you may be able to tolerate it.
