Barebones DVR Kits - Which One?

I've held off rolling my own video monitoring system, since it has
been cost-prohibitive, and the consumer gear I've evaluated was, well,
low quality.

The other day, in my favorite electronics store, I noted that several
manufacturers were providing standlone DVR's less hard drive, with
quad camera inputs, for about $400. I would still have to add a hard
drive and cameras, but this suits my needs and budget.

Two of the kits are from "Safe Home", and one from Swann.

Can anyone tell me if these are junk, or if there is a more
"professional" grade security DVR kit I should acquire?

Second question - in the retail/consumer security aisle, none of the
cameras have any zoom or closeup capability, where I may want to mount
one camera 50' away from the monitored area.

What would be a good source to buy better cameras or lenses?

Thanks for any sage advice.

Jeff.

(My application is to monitor two doorways and mailboxes that are
subject to high rates of vandalism and theft; the city won't let us
secure the premises, and law enforcement shrugs. Hoping video
recording will encourage them.)
