Back on line after a year

Well, I'm back on line after a year of no internet access. It has
been boring, to say the least. I tried to set up a Google groups account
at the public library, but Google refused to accept the data. I tried
E-mailing a couple people on the group, but they either bounced, or
there were no replies.

A lot of things have happened in the past year.

Welcome back Mike.
You have been fortunate in missing a bad year here. There has been a
whole pile of OT crap about the US elections, WMD's and some person
called god. Some of the most sane people here have been seriously
wound up by this OT stuff

Hopefully this year will be a bit better

Serious error.

Aren't you the guy that was/is in CATV? I recognize your name.

Welcome back. Hope that year wasn't too bad. Any good points?

Hello again from here too. Yep, more than a year according to my
archives. The last post of yours I have was 14th December, 2003, on
'Field Strength'.

Must say, the internet has now become such an integral part of my life
that I get withdrawal symptoms after a fortnight's holiday. So a full
year off is at first hard to contemplate.

But on further thought, I suppose I'd pretty soon revert to some other
obsession, like reading, walking - or even building electronics stuff
<g>.

I've gone over a year now without email at home. Hmm, I suppose
usenet groups can be sort of a crude replacement for email.

Maybe. I've abandoned most political commentary, even tho Jim
and a few others continually goad us with new right-wing threads.

Anything of general interest? Or even remotely related to electronics,
religion, politics, ontology, psychology, flaming, global climate
change, local weather or cuisine?

Two hurricanes, weeks without electricity, and living in a special
needs shelter till the area was deemed safe to return home. I have to
walk with a cane now, (when I can walk) and was recently declared 100%
disabled. I spent Hurricane Frances at home, listening to trees snap
and fall around the house for 48 hour without sleep or lights because I
had no transportation to the shelter. I had just managed to use epoxy
to fix the aluminum radiator on the old truck my dad had loaned me a day
or two before Hurricane Jeanne hit. My eyesight is getting worse, and
some days I can't see well enough to use the computer for more that a
few minutes at a time. The pain from my carpal tunnel is getting
worse. I did a repair recently that should have taken 15 minutes. It
took three days. Its depressing at times, but I'm not giving up.

Someone had a ball using one of my old email accounts to stir up
trouble. I managed to use a computer at the library to check my mail and
it was full of complaints. I tried to sign up for a Google Groups
account there, but Google refused, and 30 minutes at a slow computer
didn't give me time to read many threads.

I hope everyone else had a better year

Hurricanes, a boring, bland diet for my diabetes and high blood
pressure, I joined a local church and I am supposed to help them set up
some computer classes for the locals to teach them how to use a
computer, and a small class on computer repair. I have several
intelligent kids interested in repairing the hardware, and maybe
electronics in general.

I love to read, but my eyes are getting so bad its difficult to enjoy
a book anymore. The last book I got from the library I had to use my
flat bed scanner to enlarge it so I could read it on my monitor. Its
getting harder to walk. I need a cane now, and walking aggregates my
carpal tunnel, and the carpal tunnel makes it difficult to do any
delicate work. Right now my work benches are covered with plastic
because I need a new roof on the garage. I had a couple small leaks
before the hurricanes, and now the old metal roof is like a sieve. I
can't afford a new roof, and insurance is no help because the roof is a
40 year old flat metal roof.

I hope things have been better for you.

I would have rather been here anyway. Kill filters work on those
types of threads, but are useless against hurricanes. :(

I ignored my doctor's advice that I wouldn't get it and filed for
disability through the VA. They approved it in less than six weeks,
100% non service connected. I have more trouble walking now. Six moths
ago I could walk to my church and back for a full mile round trip in
about a half hour. The last time I tried it took an hour and 45
minutes, and I hurt like hell when I got home. At least they didn't
find any sign of cancer when I had a colonoscopy a couple months ago. :)

How about yourself?

They never find anything with a colonoscopy... it's just a torture
from hell.

I had a "barium enema with air" last summer after a sudden onset of
constipation and back pain. Found nothing untoward except some
diverticula. But the damned doctor inflated my gut to such a pressure
level I was in severe pain for weeks :-( I was concerned for a while
that she had perforated my intestine.

Conclusion: Don't panic until constipation goes for more than a week.
Saves you pain and money.

See if you can get one of those devices that has a monitor overtop of
a platform with a camera. People with vision problems use them. They
are rather pricey for what they are, but maybe you can get insurance
coverage or a subsidy.

One of the kids in my son's class needs one- it allows him to go to
regular school instead of a special school for the blind/visually
impaired.

Cheaper to stay on your Metamucil- get over it, you're old, you have
to pay attention to stuff like that, and it is obvious from the tenor of
your posts that you are constipated all the time:

The VA did it because I'm in my 50s, and my mother died of colon
rectal cancer at 52. The only pain I had was from two days of not
eating and taking laxatives to prepare. They put me under, and I had a
couple hours of peaceful sleep, which is too rare these days.
