I have an application that comprises of a generator with a motorised circuit
breaker and the mains switchboard has a motorised circuit breaker both
controlled by the mains failure detector on the generator.

The problem I see is the switches are not mechanically interlocked .
Is it a legal requirement to have a mechanical interlock or does a
electrical interlock suffice
thanks

My experence is that there are both electrical and mechanical interlocks.
You will be legal in most places with just one. Better check with the AHJ to
be sure. Locally around here the cities and county require both.
