Automatic Irrigation System

I am an electronics student and am never good at it but i have to submit a project and i choose this 1. Its an automatic irrigation(watering )system. I got this circuit online but i have to explain this infront of the faculties. So, plz provide me with the explanation of the circuit.

ya i know it will go by pic but our faculties want to know why each of the component is embedded in the circuit like what is the need of resistance at a particular place or capacitance at a paticular place

How about you have a go at explaining the parts you think you understand and we'll help you out if you're misunderstanding anything.

Why not start by grouping similar things together (say Q1 through Q5). What do they do? And how?
