I have an atx psu that I'm using to power a small dc motor. it says the 12v line supplies 13A, but it cuts out 1-2 seconds after powering up and the motor draws no more than 2-3 amps. I switch it off and a few seconds later I get the same result.

any thoughts as to why it would be cutting out?

It is possible that your power supply is seeing current spikes fron the motor and turning off because of them.

It is also possible that you need a load on another supply rail (try the 5V rail -- a 10 ohm 5W resistor should be fine if this is the cause)

Does the power supply shut down if you replace your motor with (say) a 12V 25W bulb?
