    Hi -

I picked up a pair of AR-2AX speakers. They seem very bassy. The
controls on the speaker seem to have no effect.

Can anyone suggest a way to remove the speaker front or a way to
    properly check them out?

  2. The drivers come out the front after removing the mounting bolts; they
are mounted with a lot of gooey stuff. The usual failure is for the
level controls to corrode and stop working, causing the tweeters
    to go off-line.

There is an "class AR web page" somewhere, don't have it here.

The AR's of that time were designed to have output dropping with
as audio frequency increased, so they will never sound "flat".

Look closely at the grill cloth in front. You will find a number of
small metal staples. Remove them and then the grill cloth will come
out with its frame. There may be some glue there, too, but you have to
look carefully and get ALL the staples out.

Once you have the grill cloth and frame out you can remove the woofer
and the fiberglass damping mats and disconnect the mid and treble
pots. They can usually be disassembled and cleaned, but there is also
    someone out there with replacements.

I use a dental tool to scrape the oxidation off of them.
