Anyone using AVR uPs for 13.56Mhz ISO 15693 reader/interrogator

I'm prototyping an ISO 15693 reader/interrogator using AVR uPs and
looking
for a read range up to 90cm. Do you know anyone else attempting this?
What about experiences trying to improve the read range?

As far as I know there are only two solutions :
- Use a large antenna (antennas for 1m range are usually 1 square meter or
so, there is a good Microchip application note on that
- Drastically increase the current in the antenna coil (meaning Amps...)
