Hello Keith,

Now they are at it again, pretty extreme pay raises for police etc. The
same rationale they had during the stock market bubble: Oh, can't
attract talent, the prop tax revenue supports it, blah, blah. Until that
bubble bursts, too...

Kids growing up in CA might want to rethink an engineering career and
consider law enforcement, legal professions or medical. All those make a
whole lot more money than engineers. EEs might pretty soon not be able
to afford a median priced house anymore.

Regards, Joerg

My youngest got his BS in Mechanical Engineering a year ago. He was
the "perpetual student", with near degrees in Chemistry and Business.

What's he doing to make a living? He's selling real estate, and
running several internet businesses ;-)

That happens more often than we think. One of the guys from my alma
mater filed his masters degree away and started a clothes manufacturing
business that is huge by now.

A number of years ago I bought an Indian (Native American) painting in
an art shop in Nevada City.

The art shop owner had a PhD in Physics from Berkeley.

He had shredded it up and made an interesting collage from it, right
inside the entrance to his shop ;-)

But life is what you make of it... if you go into ANY business BECAUSE
it will make you money, you will fail. Choose a vocation that you
like to do, and learn the joy of sleeping well.

Reminds me that a classmate of mine, David Stare, MIT Class of 1962,
founded and owns Dry Creek Vineyard, http://www.drycreekvineyard.com/

Hello Luhan,
Also, someone with no formal education can have a life-long career in
engineering.

One R&D manager was a former radio/TV repairman. Great manager, a bit
tough on the guys since he also had a decade in the army under his belt.
But things got done, and on time.

Engineers can also be a bit rough on managers. Over the years, I've
learned better social and communication skills. Once they get the idea
that I'm really on their side, I generally get whatever I need to get
the job done - even if what I need is more time.

Hello Jim,

He used to work at Aerojet.

Did they happen to make those loading belts where they mangle your
luggage as it's going into the airplane hold?

If so, that's where I know him from :)

Sorry, no. I had to let the hauler take them away, and he said he'd
donate them to a trade school or something.
