If you ever need to find a good German restaurant in Santa Barbara, look
for a sign in the window....

"Se Habla Deutch"

I thought that German restaurants and decent cuisine were mutually
incompatible ?

I *do* like the wonderfully named bratwurst though.

Hello Graham,

incompatible ?

Ahem. That wasn't nice.
I *do* like the wonderfully named bratwurst though.

Try Johnsonville "Brats" from Costco. Weird name for a bratwurst but
they taste better than many varieties in Germany. More spicy, too. I
like them the most when slow cooked on a Weber charcoal grill.

was the name of the place you took me for lunch?

...Jim Thompson

A super secret German bakery is hidden in Sierra Vista with outstanding
pretzel rolls. Which they sell out of by 6:01 am.

Goes by the name of "bread store" or something equally subtle.

Try the Wal-Mart knock-offs of the Johnsonville product. Just as good
and a dollar cheaper.

Indeed, I have had some *spectacular* meals in Germany.

Yes, and the beer there is *way* better!

Maybe. In AZ a $250k property pays ~$2400/yr for taxes. Mind you, car
registration costs more than one month's car payment here...

Not according to Jim.

The difference in property tax : +$3100
The difference in car registration : $400
Getting out of the commie North East: Priceless

I'm working on it.

Count your blessings. It would be double that here in Ca.

bastard will be paying your taxes.

Well, now I'm confused. I thought it was the demon-rat, knee-jerk liberal
weenies who were so addicted to taxing the citizenry into slavery.

Can somebody explain this to me?

You don't read too well?

Hello Luhan,
Yes, and the beer there is *way* better!

The Pilseners and Hefeweizens sure are. But we have some excellent micro
brews out here. Some of the (almost) mainstream brews like Sierra Nevada
are top notch. Winfield would vote for Samuel Adams though which is also
a wonderful beer. Then there is Widmer's Hefeweizen from Oregon.

Except for a few large cities our Walmarts aren't super centers so they
don't carry much in terms of food items.

Ah, yes, Widmer's Hefeweizen... marvelous! Thanks to John Larkin for
introducing me to it!

Sam's is drinkable surely, but I wonder if it can still be called a
"micro-brew"? Didn't Miller buy out Widmer's some 25 years back? Miller
is worse than Budweiser. Miller screwed me out of much (for me) money
when I was in college. I've been paying them back ever since.

The Walmarts in most of the country are exactly the opposite. They tend
to concentrate in the small cities, and the super-stores are *everywhere*.
OTOH, we do our (un)fair share of making things miserable for all
retailers. The first WalMart in the state opened in '95. ...not that I
much care. Ammo isn't too much more expensive across the street at Dave's.

What do you mean by 'actually resident'? I did not buy any real estate
there, file a tax return there, register a vehicle there, have a drivers
license or insurance from there, or have a job there.

If you reside in Vermont for three months, you're a legal resident. If
you have a vehicle in the state for six months, even if you're a
resident of another state, you must register it in Vermont (NY is three
months, IIRC).
Parking does not constitute residency.

It does in some states. I hope you have a good lawyer, the state has a
lot of 'em. ...including the ones in the black robes.

Hello Rich,

But on the way to that spot a highway patrol officer could become a bit
miffed if the plates are expired ;-)
Or, just borrow somebody's plate for a day, and don't get pulled over. :)

Cheers!

I saw one guy who had a plate with all top-bottom reversible
letters/numbers. He had mounted it upside down. It wouldn't fool
anybody who got really close, but I bet it would fool the automated
cameras and OCR systems on the toll highway.

I don't see anything in the Highway Traffic Act specifically
prohibiting that, only defacing or altering the plate, not keeping it
clean, covering it with material to prevent cameras from "accurately
photographing it", etc.

Best regards,

Hi,

I'm helping clean out an old house in Scituate, Massachusetts, along
the south coast. If anybody's interested, we have

One classic Hallicrafters SkyBuddy sw receiver

One Yaesu FT-101B ssb xcvr

a huge pile of TV-repair-type tubes

gobs of other electronic and mechanical stuff you really
don't want to know about.

You can have things for just the cost of shipping, or maybe less.
Seems a shame to throw it out.

Boy, they have a lot of regulations here! In California, we just sell a
house. Here, all sorts of inspectors make sure it's worthy of being
sold.

Hello Keith,
...unless you've been in the house for ten years. Then the other poor
bastard will be paying your taxes.

Now they are at it again, pretty extreme pay raises for police etc. The
same rationale they had during the stock market bubble: Oh, can't
attract talent, the prop tax revenue supports it, blah, blah. Until that
bubble bursts, too...

Kids growing up in CA might want to rethink an engineering career and
consider law enforcement, legal professions or medical. All those make a
whole lot more money than engineers. EEs might pretty soon not be able
to afford a median priced house anymore.
