    Hello,

I am planning to put together a community forums-based web site about
alternative energy. It will be a bit before I am finished but I wanted to
ask if it would be permissible in this group to make an announcement when
the site is live. It is non-commercial and meant for fun and learning.
    Thanks.

What particular group are you asking about? You posted to five.

Actually I posted to four and it was crossposted because I am interested in
    responses in all four.

You still haven't specified what you meant by "this group", which is
I think what he was trying to point out. You also trimmed the
attribution of who "he" is, by the way.

You still haven't specified what you meant by "this group", which is
I'm sorry but I don't quite follow you. I wrote "this group" because I was
curious about each, indivual group I posted it to. I would like to announce
when the site is live, yet be respectful of the tolerance the regulars have
to such posts. I don't spam.

As to the attribution, I don't really find it necessary. Any threaded
newsreader displays that properly. The context of the discussion, IMHO, is
what matters. I've posted this way for years and no one has ever called it
    into question.

I guess that would be "these groups" then?
Actually, no. According to the above, it seems that "seeker" wrote the
"You still haven't specified..." part, which you didn't write, I did.
Maybe you just haven't been paying attention, but I've only seen anyone
do it that way in a decade or more. Maybe you're just way smarter than
    everybody else, though.

With comments like that, maybe you're trolling. I'm willing to debate the
merits of anything and certainly willing to see another viewpoint but keep
    it civilized, please.

Your point is well taken. I generally quote relevant text but not the "This
user wrote" portion because I have never had a problem distinguishing what
people wrote what. I simply look at the 'from' field of the post in the
context of the thread. At any rate, we're veering off-topic so I'll just
say thanks for the alternative viewpoint.

Not at all trolling. But, I still can't believe that you've never
noticed that _everyone else_ leaves in the "So and so said" before
that which they said. Assuming that your particular newsreader's
display is universal isn't realistic; showing who wrote that which
you are quoting keeps things in context, gives credit (or blame)
to the correct person, and makes conversations easier to follow.

At least you're not top-posting, though.

  11. gotta say that I've seen plenty of AOLers posts that don't leave in the
"So and so said" before that which they said.

  12. Despite all the ping pong I still have no idea of the context of your
    question... what sort of site?

(and I really dsilike when people don't top post - what a waste of time,
scrolling down to find the meassage when it could be there in front of
    you...)

  13. Yes. Isn't commenting on other's top posting the sign of a net pro?
Sorry Dave, but the slavish commitment to bottom posting regardless of the
nasty traps lying in that direction, or the lack of any need, annoys me,
likely as much as top posting does you.

Oh, yes, you're right, this does flow _so_ much better this way, Fred.
As much as I'd really love to have this debate, I got bored with it
    a decade ago.
