Have you checked the mains connection? Fuses?
More details, please.

Thanks for reply.This gadget is a friend's. I have found the circuit diagrams. Apart from the main fuse their are two 'protectors'. Not attended yet.

And what would they be?
NTC?
MOV?
Resettable resistor?
Or a mixture?
