In ADT's contract of a monitoring term, it states that the rates can
go up after the 1st year. Are there any current or former customers who
can vouch that this might've happened to them in the middle of their
monitoring term?

The contract terms changed a while back. It used to be they could increase
the rates after 90 days and they always went up $5 during the fourth or
fifth month of service with a lengthy letter explaining how everything else
had also increased.
You should expect an increase as soon as it becomes possible.

This is true of most service contracts. The is some validity to this
increase since it ensures that service rates keep up with inflation
and increasing costs suffered by the provider (increases in technician
labor wages, etc.). These increases, like most everthing else in
life, may be negotiable.

One of the worst cases of rate raising I know of was with the borg. I
took over a customer with a dead borg system. She had just completed
her contract. She told me that the system had crashed about 5 months
after she got it, but was no longer under warranty (90 day warranty).
They wanted several hundred dollars to replace it. Having thought she
had a full warranty, and considering the system was only 5 months old,
she refused to pay. She told them she would rather pay out the
remaining months over time then cancel, which is exactly what she did.

Rather than just let this play out and let her cancel at the end of
the contract, the borg, knowing she was a gonner after 36, raised her
rate at every available opportunity even though she had no working
system for 31 months of the contract. Her final rate, which started
out in the $29.99 range, was something like $35 or $36 per month...for
no service. Needless to say, she made a point of retelling that story
to anyone considering a security system.
