ADT type alarm WITHOUT phone line?

A

I want to get a monitored alarm system like those offered by ADT at my
business. But I do not have, or plan to get, a phone line or data line
installed at this location (I simply don't need it and don't want to spend
the extra money). Is there some service that provides a link between the
alarm system and a centralized monitoring office without requiring a phone
line? I called ADT and they said a phone line is expected. I hesitate to
use the word "wireless" because I am not concerned about the link between
the various sensors and a control box at my location, but rather the link
between my location and the alarm company's office.

Any suggestions?

Depends on what area you're in. In the US and Canada many cities support
"Alarm Net" wireless RF CS communications. There's also "Uplink" and DSC's
"SkyRoute" (both of which use cellular technology).

Uplink: http://www.nmrx.com/h_uplink.asp

SkyRoute: http://www.dsc.com/products/alarmCommunications/wirCom.asp

Neither of the above systems require you to subscribe to a cellular service
and the extra cost from your alarm company to utilize this technology is
quite nominal...

My God ..are you nuts!...... might as well post your credit card number, you
pin and
whetever else you want protected if you use someone from this group! If your
familys saftey is a concern...DO NOT USE THIS GROUP FOR
ADVISE OR GIVE OUT ANY INFORMATION. If you deal with someone from this
newsgroup you better keep one eye
open while your sleep at night! this is the worse place to look for info
for your home security. This group is a hive of activity to get your
confidence then rip your off. Get "help" from here and next think your
house is
cleaned out and inexplicably your alarm didnt work......or worse.....
Be very very careful using this group.
Be sure to closely investigate (primarily if you
buy online) any of the online alarm seller, especially if they claim a ASA
certification, a totally false and misleading certification (see that
later). You wouldn't want to buy from someone whose sideline is
understanding your alarm system for the purpose of exploiting it later
byknowing your codes or maintenance access numbers. Be wary of those who do
not have a brick and mortar store.

When I was shopping and using this newsgroup some online dealers advertised
a ASA certification with a picture of a ASA emblem shown on their website.
It gives a good first impression but when you look into it you find out that
it was nothing more then some....guy.... creating a website to supposedly
post complaints, with no entries of complaints or follow-through. It was
analogous to someone flashing a police badge that turns out to be fake. The
ASA moniker is a badge without any accreditation and surely this is
misleading and a scam.

Some of the free advice you get is not because of someone's unselfish need
to make the world a better place to live. Most are giving you advice on the
hope of getting a sale or...."other" information. Listen but don't act on
the advice until you can confirm or gain some trust in the source by
researching them.

Sometimes you can learn a lot about sellers by plugging in email address or
screenname into a Google search of past news postings. You will be
surprised, .....no..MAKE THAT SHOCKED....AND I MEAN SHOCKED!!!!..... at what
you find out about those offering to outfit your alarm. How can our legal
system let these type of people sell home security!!!!!

This is a very unregulated online business, and especially risky for
something as important as YOUR HOME security.

good luck....and go talk to someone reputible.

Caddx alarm panels made by GE have a module for their NX panels that will
allow you to send signals over the cell phone system. A phone line is not
required.

A lot depends on where you live. Most police authorities make alarm
verification mandatory. Hard to verify with no means of communication. I cannot
see anyone with a location that is not worth the cost of a plain old telephone
line. In case of emergency how would you summon help?
FIRE-HEALTH- etc. etc

Good point, Rich. In a similar application to the OP's, an "on premise"
cell phone that Telus (our local telephone provider) programmed as an
"emergency" line "fit the bill". They (Telus) charged $9.95 per month for
the service and something like $.30 per minute for calls. "911" calls were
of course free. I don't think the authorities stipulate what kind of "on
premise" telephone service you use as long as a phone rings there...

I'm with ADT and just installed a Focus 200 panel with a Tellular cell phone
backup unit as the primary line... No phone/data lines at the site... Works
fine... (Subject to cell phone carrier's availability)

Call your salesman back. If he doesn't know what I'm talking about, ask for
a different salesman or the sales manager.

Try Bass Home Electronics. That fat bastard is so far removed from what the
ndustry currently offers he's probably still selling direct wire services.

Heh... the wire/string can't go around any corners, can't touch the
"ground" and you have to keep it taut between the two cans...

He really should look at the Telephany 2000. It utilizes brain wave
patterns, and subliminal thoughts of criminal activities far before they are
actually committed, and transmits them with AES encryption telepathically to
the property owner. Pre-Alarm conditions can be programmed as either gas,
bloating, nausea, or menstrual crampage. These are great systems when you
would require your Mother-in-Law to monitor the system for you. However, I
do advise turning off the pre-alarm state if you do that, other wise you
will experience nuisance alarms. When I would ask her if they were "real"
alarms...she always answered "depends". I have added the pigeon 1220 as back
up, for those weekend drinking binges that seemed to produce BFI
intermittently between events. The pigeon 1220, which replaced the older
1200 model, is now capable of feeding itself, and the range was extended
from the city limits, to be able to reach your home in the county at up to
75 miles. The 1220 also features the new "hunt and pecker" technology for
criminal intervention at the scene. No phone lines, no data lines, no
cellular required. The systems are available at any Lowes, Home Depot or
Radio Shack. It's changed my life!

Damn it. I'm sick of these firmware changes. The 1200 was a great unit,
until I bought a new house. Then I was out of range, and had to upgrade to
the 1220. I'll bet I need an RMA too? Looks like my back-up will be down a
few days. I wonder if that Falcon II is worth looking in to? I heard that
unit has "flash" memory, and a faster transmission. I do worry about it
being to aggressive though, I have chickens in my back yard. Thanks for the
heads up, I must have missed that recall notice.

Chuck, nobody likes a TattleTale. Just this week I got a call from my sons
teacher demanding that he stop. I don't won't to see people going through
the same thing I'm going through, that TattleTale shit is annoying, take it
from me.

Not everyone can work for a classy, responsible, knowledgeable (and
professional) organisation like Monitronics there, Mark... Those of us who
don't shouldn't have that fact "lorded over us" all the time... ;-}

PS... You can email me the cheque anytime...

Massachusetts School Systems, and using tryetholchloride in the Navy...I
