I have a quartz clock movement which is time triggered to make a cuckoo sound on the hour. Very small movement--I took the back cover off and there is the time/sound module with two red wires hooked to a small speaker. The problem is it's so loud I'm thinking about permanently disabling it. Is there a way to add some kind of volume control by cutting the wires and adding a potentiometer? Thanks

yes you could do that you could use a trimpot ie. the very small variable resistor with the screwdriver blade slot, rather than the larger one with the spindle that a know would screw to.
Probably a 4k7 or 10k pot would be ideal. Connect the output wires from the circuit board across the 2 outer terminals of the pot. connect 1 of the 2 wires from the speaker to the centre
terminal of the pot ie. the wiper and the other wire to either of the 2 outer terminals.
