Can anyone explain to me why i need to synchronise an ADC when communicating via SPI? I don't really understand the purpose of the sync command. Am i right in thinking that as long as I allow enough time between each byte i send there's no need to syn the uC and ADC?

Also is it possible to communicate with a ADC whilst ignoring the DRDY Pin?

    thanks in advance

    1) Which ADC are you using?

    2) Sync is typically used to synchronize the ADC to a reference sample rate or to synchronize multiply ADCs.

    3) It depends on the ADC what you receive when you try to read data befor DRDY. One ADC may deliver old data (repeat the lasst sample), another will deliver garbage, yet another one will not respond at all.

Read the data sheet and app-notes of your ADC to find in-depth information.
