Hi Guys, My name is Michael Ryan, i dabble in electronics at home as a hobby.
Im Working on a project where space to reduce ac to dc is extremely limited.
I need to get approximately 5volts Dc, 150mA from a 220volt Ac supply.
The problem is i only have about 120 cubic millimeters (5mmx5mmx5mm approx) to fit it into.
I realize that off the shelf converters are way too big.
Are there any other Micro electronics or technology out there that can achieve this, or are we waiting for ET!!!!o_O
But seriously, i have limited ability when it comes to researching and would appreciate any comments or views negative or otherwise that would resolve this one way or the other for me.
Thanks guys.

Hi
Welcome

your size requirements at this time are pretty much unobtainable

and in future please don't multi post the same thread in multiple places :)

cheers

The Apple (et al) small USB charger that is a little over 1x1x1 inches is the smallest safety-tested thing I've seen.

Hi Daven, sorry bout the double post, I'm a newbie to these forums!!
Is there is any possibility at all, I'm thinking of companies that custom build or is it just impossible with available technology today?
Cheers,Mick

Hi Mick

no probs on the posts, I deleted them ;)

just about any one of the bunch components needed would take up all that space

you wouldn't even be able to do a DC - DC converter for that size

So you want to convert 1 W of 220 VAC with isolation in a space smaller than a pencil eraser?
What are you "dabbling" at?

For 220VAC, you're going to have a (hefty, compared to the size you're talking about) mains power lead connected to power it. Can't you use a small, external power supply, connected to the mains power lead?

Or buy a plugpack/wall wart.

For safe isolation of the 5V from the 220V you require >=6mm of creepage/air gap. This alone is more than what is available to you.
