a non contact device to detect whether power is connected or not. am after a circuit diagram for just the AC finder part

Have a look at eevblog. Dave pulled one of these apart and made mention of how they work.

Essentially you have a cmos inverter with it's input left floating and attached to a short antenna. The rest of the circuit catches and extends pulses.
