how long do video cameras used for security installation operating
continuously, last? i mean that video quality degrades over time, i
would like to have an idea how long do such cameras last before video
deteriorates into something unacceptable ... months? years?

    thank you in advance

I haven't seen a modern security camera slowly degrade over time. Perhaps
you are thinking of the older tube based image sensors. We recently had
one of 12 cameras die at a storage facility and it was fine right up until
    it
wasn't. However, it was in operation approximately 2.5 years 24/7. Note
that the other 11 are still fine though I could wish for more resolution.
The price of resolution is that more hard drive is required for image
    archives.
