8051 Developers Kit

I bet most people would find even more PIC devices in their every-day
life.

Not here. Of microcontroller controlled devices, that I at least know of,
8051 family devices are quite plentiful. I can probably count on one hand
the devices I know have PICs in them. I have to take my shoes and socks of
to count 8051 derived devices. Add to that their 8038/8042/8049 cousins.
I'd say some form of Motorola 6800 is second. Next to that is mass made
Japanese or Chinese 4 bit controllers, or actual x86 compatible CPUs.

Try using a 6SN7GTB. It is a lot less obsolete than an 8051.

Except that an 8051 is NOT obsolete, dingledorf!
